Stripe it rich
Stripes have demonstrated enduring appeal in our homes, as well as in our wardrobes. A fixture in interior design since ancient times, their popularity in modern design can be traced back to the 18th century and they’ve continued to be popularised, evolving and enduring. From bold, graphic patterns to subtle, tonal variations, the key to their success is their versatility.
Horizontal stripes can stretch the perceived dimensions of a room, creating a sense of spaciousness, making a small space feel more roomy. Meanwhile, vertical stripes draw the eye upwards, creating an illusion of height in rooms with lower ceilings.
For 2024, traditional striped patterns are being reinvented once again in terms of scale, colour and pattern. Dramatic, oversized stripes make a bold statement, especially when coupled with contrasting hues or varying gradients of a single colour scheme. Consider creating a statement wall adorned with large-scale stripes in a vibrant colour. Or for a more nuanced aesthetic, opt for a subdued palette with tonal stripes to create a sense of subtle elegance and timeless sophistication.
Merging stripes of different scales, colours, and orientations can result in wonderfully interesting spaces. For example, experiment by juxtaposing classic pinstripes with bold, graphic stripes for an eclectic yet balanced aesthetic. It’s easier than you think and adds layers of intrigue to any room.
We’re not just talking about your walls. One of the easiest and most impactful ways to introduce stripes into your home is through textiles. From rugs to pillows, curtains to upholstery, textiles present countless opportunities to bring stripes into your decor. For instance, fabrics with delicate stripe motifs will gently introduce texture and dimension. Or if you want to command attention, choose bold, eye-catching graphic patterns.
Striped accessories are another brilliant way to enjoy the timeless charm of this motif. From striped vases and artwork to striped bedding and table linens, these accents can instantly amp up the style of any space. Personally, I’m loving a striped (preferably candy-style stripes) tiled bathroom. It feels traditional yet modern. Also, accessories with metallic or reflective finishes enhance the visual impact of stripes and create a sense of luxury and sophistication.
Opt for striped wallpaper to give the illusion of more space or create some classic luxury appeal with textiles and trinkets
