Dying mum begged strangers to take injured baby to safety

- DANIEL KEANE

Amother who was stabbed to death in the Sydney shopping centre knife attack begged two men to take her baby before she succumbed to her injuries.

Ash Good (38) was among the six shoppers fatally stabbed in the city’s Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre on Friday.

The attacker, a 40-year-old man, was shot dead by a female police officer outside a discount shop in the centre.

Ms Good was named as one of the victims of the attack by several local media outlets.

Hours before the attack, she had posted a video on Instagram of her nine-monthold baby smiling in a car seat.

The attacker is said to have stabbed the baby and then Ms Good, according to The West Australian.

Ms Good then ran to two brothers in a shop and begged them to take her baby, the newspaper reported. The men used clothes to attempt to stem the bleeding from both Ms Good and her daughter, but the mother’s injuries were too severe.

Ms Good died in St Vincent’s Hospital, according to local media.

The baby was last night still in Sydney emergency services rushed to the scene.

A man who witnessed the attacker stab a woman as he and his girlfriend ran out of the shopping centre said he felt “powerless” as he saw the attacker “taking the life of someone else and wasn’t able to do anything”.

Carlos Ferras (32) said: “I was in the mall with my girlfriend when, very near the entrance, suddenly a crowd came running. I started looking into the crowd trying to understand the commotion and very soon realised there was a guy following them with a quite long knife.

“At that point my girl pulled me to run into the mall, but I noticed we would be running in parallel to the attacker, as at that point he was literally next to us on the other side of the corridor.

“The guy seemed focused on going forward so he didn’t notice us. I took my girl and led her towards the mall entrance while keeping an eye on the guy — and it was at that moment that I saw him stabbing a lady. He pretty much stuck the full knife into her stomach.

“I felt powerless, I had the guy in front me, alone, saw him taking the life of someone else, and wasn’t able to do anything.”
