TRIGGERS THAT HIT THE RED ALERT FOR ROSACEA SUFFERERS

-

IT’S been dubbed the ‘Curse of the Celts’. But as Rosacea Awareness Month continues, the common skin problem doesn’t have to leave you red-cheeked, in either sense.

Officially, more than three per cent of the Irish population live with the inflammatory condition that shows up as underlying redness and visible blood vessels, typically in the middle of the face.

But, it’s also believed to be hugely underdiagnosed, meaning many more — especially women over 30 — may be suffering in silence.

“Genetics are the number one reason people get it, but it can also be triggered by UV exposure, stress, alcohol, caffeine and heat,” explains skincare expert Michelle Ryan.

“Because of the symptoms, rosacea can commonly be mistaken for eczema, acne, or an allergic reaction. As each person’s symptoms and triggers vary, it’s important to visit your GP or dermatologist for an assessment and diagnosis first.”

Most common in fair, sun-sensitive skin — giving rise to its nickname — flushing can also sometimes include the neck, chest, and scalp, and be triggered by smoking, spicy food or exercise.

Although there’s no definitive cause or cure, the good news is that the symptoms can be controlled, with medication, laser therapy such as BBL (BroadBand Light), and self-care.

“At home, you can avoid any triggers that cause your skin to flare up,” says Michelle, who is National Trainer for cosmeceutical brand, Ultraceuticals, exclusive to salons. “Using gentle skincare can also help reduce flare-ups.

“Sun protection is a must-have in your daily routine if you suffer from this condition — wear SPF daily, no matter the weather, as UV exposure can exacerbate symptoms.

“Remember to apply it all over your face, neck, and ears, and reapply SPF every two hours.”

Formulated to calm and hydrate the skin, the cruelty-free brand’s redness-reducing products include an Ultra Calming Cleanser (€45), Ultra Calming Moisturiser Cream (€59), Ultra R.E.D Corrective Serum (€102.50) and Ultra UV Protective Daily Mineral Defence SPF50+ (€65), also available from ultraceuticals.ie.

“You’ll want to avoid cleansing with harsh formulas that leave your skin feeling tight and dry,” continues Michelle.

“Avoid using hot water to cleanse the skin and avoid scrubbing or intense washing too.

“After a cleanse, lock in hydration to soothe and condition the skin’s natural moisturiser barrier.

“Since irritants vary from person to person, always test a new product on your neck to prevent causing a reaction on the face,” she advises.

“If you react, always note the ingredients, and try something different.”
