Carlingfor­d top of Winter League at Halfway Stage

CARLINGFOR­D Celtic had an emphatic 7-0 victory over nearest rivals, Edentubber, on Sunday last in the North Louth Winter League.

After a cautious start by both teams, Celtic took the lead on 20 minutes when following a great move down the left wing James McShane fired low to the bottom corner of the net. 10 minutes later it was 2-0 when a cross cum shot from James McShane sailed into the top corner of the net.

Edentubber battled away and had a chance to reduce the lead when Mickey Nugent broke clear but Graham McNally in the Celtic goals pulled off a great save. Carlingfor­d made it 3-0 just before half time when Richie Magee beat two defenders in the box and beat the advancing keeper.

Carlingfor­d dominated the second half and made it 4-0 when Paddy Farrell weaved his way through the Edentubber defence for a fine individual goal. Carlingfor­d, driven on by a strong midfield of Ronan Hanlon, Conor Dullaghan and Micheal O’Callaghan, went 5-0 up when a neat passing movement ended with Paddy Farrell getting his second goal.

Edentubber heads had dropped at this stage but Carlingfor­d kept pressing and Micheal O’Callaghan made it 6-0 with a strong finish in the 75th minute.

Edentubber created a few chances but the Carlingfor­d defence and Graham McNally stood firm. The final goal came in the 80th minute when Paddy Farrell got his third goal with a fine finish.

The league has now reached its half way stage with Carlingfor­d leading with 19 points after 8 games.

They are followed in joint 2nd place by Edentubber (7 games), Greenfield (7 games) and Castletown (8 games) on 13 points. Rampart (8 games) have 12 points, Faughart (8 games) have 11 points, Ravensdale (8 games) have 7 points, Glen (7 games) have 4 points and Haggardsto­wn (8 games) have 3 points.

The remaining results from last Sunday are as follows;

Castletown 0 Faughart 2 (Owen O’Hare and Terry McCloskey); Rampart Celtic 3 (Nathan Flynn 2, Ryan Duffy 1) Haggardsto­wn 0. The Ravensdale / Glen United match was postponed.

The fixtures for this coming Sunday are as follows; Greenfield v Edentubber at Muirhevnam­or at 11 am; Ravensdale v Faughart at Ravensdale at 11.30 am; Haggardsto­wn v Glen at Muirhevnam­or at 1 pm; Ramparts v Carlingfor­d at Muirhevnam­or at 3 pm.
