- Rita Flanagan 1928 - 2016 The late Rita Flanagan.

RITA Flanagan passed away peacefully on 26 November, surrounded by her family.

She was one of eleven children born to Annie and William, Ladywell Terrace, Dundalk.

Rita loved being around her family. She was mother to Patricia, Beryl, Ann, Gerry, Catriona and Ciaran. She was also a grandmothe­r, a great-grandmothe­r and a great-great-grandmothe­r.

While raising a family, Rita also held down various jobs. She worked at Dundalk Regional Technical College and the Adelphi Restaurant, among other places.

She led a busy life, and was involved in a number of activities in the locality, such as organising the sports day at Ladywell Terrace, and helping at Ladywell Shrine by filling the bottles with holy water.

Rita had a fantastic vegetable garden, and tended to beautiful flower beds, while her stews on Saturday and Sunday roasts were much looked forward to.

She enjoyed trips to Mosney, and spins out to Blackrock, where she would often be spotted with all of her grandchild­ren.

Rita was involved in the Friary church choir.

Possessed of excellent penmanship, she was the winner of a handwritin­g competitio­n; and was known for getting requests played on local radio.

Rita travelled to Gran Canaria many times and to Fuertevent­ura and Ibiza, while she was a regular visitor to England to see her daughter and sister.

Throughout her life, Rita was unselfish in so many ways. She cared for everybody!

She had a special relationsh­ip with her daughter Beryl (BB). They lived together until Rita needed to move to a nursing home, St. Oliver’s in Dundalk.

In time, Beryl also needed to move to a nursing home, and a place became available at Dealgan House Nursing Home, where Rita and Beryl were able to be together again.

Rita was cared for beautifull­y, and for the first time in her life, someone was looking after her.

Her family will remember her in so many ways, particular­ly for her singing and ready smile.

She reposed at her daughter, Patricia’s home in Greenacres, 246 Greenacres ; before a beautiful and well-attended service in St Patrick’s Cathedral.

All her nearest and dearest were present, including family members from London, and her grandson from New York.

Grandchild­ren did the Readings, while her great-grandchild­ren participat­ed in the offertory procession to the altar.

Burial was in St Patrick’s Cemetery.
