PRESIDENT VISITS ELDERLY
March 1988
PRESIDENT Hillery fulfils a promise when he visits St Oliver Plunkett’s hospital for the elderly in Dundalk.
He is due to perform the official opening last June, but is unable to carry out the engagement.
On arrival, the president is introduced to the matron and staff, before meeting patients during a tour of the building.
President Hillery attends the blessing of a new grotto at the hospital, which is performed by Fr Larkin, administrator of the Redeemer parish.
The grotto is presented by the local Order of Malta. Canon Shields represents the Order of Malta, and others present include Pat Clarke, CEO of the North Eastern Health Board, and its chairman, Joe Farrell; as well as Garda Superintendent Brian McCabe.
A variety concert organised by the International Police Association features Dundalk gardaí, alongside other musicians, singers and dancers.
President Hillery remains for the entire programme, which is also enjoyed by 100-year-old Minnie McCobb
