ROTARY CLUB GIVING A HELPING HAND TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
Dundalk Rotary Club gave a helping hand to several local charitable organisations at a special function in the Crowne Plaza Hotel last week.
Additionally the Club unveiled a plaque on Joceyln Grove where they have planted hundreds of crocuses as part of Rotary’s mission to eradicate polio worldwide
The purple crocuses symbolise the purple paint that villagers dip their finger into when the vaccinated from polio.
To date Rotarians worldwide have spent over $2 billion over thirty years in tackling polio and they have succeeded in eradicating the disease from nearly two hundred countries across the globe, leaving just three countries where the disease remains.
‘ The presentations last week to local groups is part of our annual programme’, explained Club President, Seamus McDermott, adding that the funds for the donations come from activities such as the Christmas Remembrance Tree, Pancake Breakfast and member subscriptions.
Meanwhile the plaque on Jocelyn Grove highlights the planting carried out by Louth County Council some years ago.
‘We have planted crocuses at various places around the town, such as Ice House Hill, Naughton Park and along the Navvy Bank over the years to highlight Rotary’s campaign against polio’, explained Seamus, who expressed gratitude to Louth County Council for their assistance with their Jocelyn Grove project.
