Glenmore girls do club proud

WOODVIEW leapfrogged to the top of the table after they beat the hitherto leaders Quay by the odd goal in five to inflict their first defeat of the campaign on Thursday night.

It was the perfect riposte after the disconcerting abandonment of Woodview’s game with Donacarney earlier in the week when they had the big incentive if they won of dislodging Quay and take over as leaders..

For Quay the setback is cushioned by the fact that they have a match less played and can regain top spot by winning it, as a mere point separate the teams.

It looks like the title rests between the pair.

Owen Armstrong, Conor Macken and Stephen Begley scored a goal apiece for the new leaders.

Fane temporarily took over as second in the table with a draw against Rampart on the same night the Woodview versus Donacarney game was abandoned.

The draw featured a brace of goals for either side with Dean McConnell the marksman for Fane, and Andrew Kieran equalling his feat for Rampart.

However, Fane then suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Walshestown for whom Ryan Carbury bagged a hattrick as they moved within two points of Fane with two games less played.

U9 girls Aoife Mc Donald and Zoe White competed in the pairs 60m and 300m event finishing in the top 8.

Joined by Aine Finnegan and Holly Mc Cann the girls ran very well in the 4x100m relay just outside the top qualifying spot.

The U11 pair Katie Mc Donald and Jessica White ran in the 60m sprint finishing a very credible 6th position. They competed in the U11 4x100m relay with Grace Keenan and Emma Mc Carragher, qualified for the final and finished outside the medals on the day.

Glenmore AC were very well represented at Scoil Naomh Lorcan’s well supported and well organised inaugural Long Woman’s 5K race on Wednesday evening in Omeath.

The weather conditions made it a tough run for some but the winner’s podium was awash of green singlets regardless of the heat. Shane Toner(17:07) was placed 2nd male and just missed out on 1st place which was taken by Daragh Greene (Dunleer AC). Third man was another Glenmore athlete Kevin Harnet (20:31) whose running form is going from strength to strength of late.

First female was another Glenmore athlete Lisa Conlon(21:27) (U16) which was an amazing feat under such humid weather conditions, 2nd female was Rebecca Carolan(Boyne AC) and 3rd was our very own Sarah Dooney(23:48).

Other Glenmore Athletes who competed in what proved to be a very successful event, Christopher Connolly, Tony Ashby, Paul Flanagan, Pat Ferguson, Lloyd Byrne, Katie Mallon, Kinga Byrne, Mia Ashby, Alice Ferguson, Ava Ashby, Joan Farron, Rose White, Paddy Gill, Aaron O’Connor, Stephanie Malone, Stephen O’Connor, Emma O’Connor, Noeleen Hallahan, Elizabeth Rafferty, Teresa Keenan, Katie Bell.

Meanwhile Glenmore AC were represented at The Waterford Viking Marathon event in Waterford on Saturday. Due to health and safety reasons the full marathon distance had been cancelled the previous night due to soaring temperatures, so Fiona Mc Quade(1:56:18) competed in the Half distance along with fellow Glenmore athlete Barry Woods(2:34:36) at stages temperatures rose as high as 28degrees and the distance proved a struggle at times so congratulations to the pair on their achievement.

And further afield Glenmore Athlete Terry Steeples, who thankfully has acclimatised himself to hotter climates during his tour of duty with the Irish Army in Lebanon, has successfully completed the Beirut Half Marathon in 2hrs with temper- JUST one athlete from St Peter’s AC was in action last weekend, as Tom McGrane travelled to the Mary Peters Track in Belfast for the Northern Ireland Masters’ Championships on Saturday.

These championships are not restricted to Northern Ireland athletes but are open to all.

They attracted a good entry from right across Ireland as well as some athletes who came across from Scotland and England.

Tom added 40cm to his season’s best, set when winning the Leinster title at the beginning of June, to take silver in the M55 Shot Putt with a throw of 10.06m.

The event was won by Bosco Reid of Finn Valley AC in Co. Donegal with John atures reaching 34 degrees!

Terry was the main organiser of the recent Glenmore Challenge held in Lebanon to coincide with the locally held Glenmore Challenge 10m + 10k road race. Terry’s event managed to raise a significant amount of funds which was donated to The Maria Goretti Foundation in Lordship.

We’d like to wish Vicky Leahy and Joan Farron good luck at next weekend’s inaugural Magee 1866 Donegal Wild Atlantic Half Marathon and all other athletes are hard at training for Glenmore AC’s next event the Carlingford 5k ( Michael Fearon and Kevin Marron 5k Road Race) on the 3rd August, online registration is via MyRunResults. com and for further details check out our Facebook page.
