Water supplies shut off over night in Cooley
WATER supplies in Cooley were temporarily cut off following the break down of a pump, councillors heard at their July meeting.
Cllr. Antoin Watters queried the overnight water stoppages which occurred across the peninsula.
Director of Services Willie Walsh told the meeting that a mechanical fault at the Ardtullybeg water plant was the reason for the planned stoppages.
Indeed the local authority had announced early last week that the Rath reservoir, which feeds Cooley, was badly depleted as a result of the fault.
‘Due to the ongoing high demand across this scheme the recovery of reservoir levels will be very slow and may not be enough to satisfy daytime demand,’ a spokesman warned.
The council announced that in order to conserve water and ensure ongoing day-time supply; water was being turned off between 11pm and 7am to the following areas: Cooley, Lordship, Bush and surrounding areas.
The pump was repaired and put back into service, But the outage, coupled with strong demand in the area, caused water levels in the Rath reservoir to fall significantly. This has had the desired effect and reservoir levels are now above 75%.
Water supplies were also re-directed from the Carlingford supply to supplement water storage and to prevent a day-time outage in Cooley.
