CCTV cam­eras are a ‘pow­er­ful de­ter­rent’

A drug deal caught live on the garda mon­i­tored CCTV cam­era led to an ar­rest and a per­son be­ing brought to court, mem­bers of the Dun­dalk Joint Polic­ing Com­mit­tee heard last week.

Chief Supt Christy Man­gan also re­vealed that the pres­ence of CCTV cam­eras also helped gar­dai solve a se­ri­ous crime which they wouldn’t have been able to do with­out CCTV. While not elab­o­rat­ing on the in­ci­dent, he said it was ‘a nasty crime’.

He ac­knowl­edged the im­por­tance of CCTV cam­eras in pre­vent­ing crime and also in bring­ing about pros­e­cu­tions. ‘It’s a pow­er­ful de­ter­rent.’

A call had been made at the meet­ing for a CCTV scheme for Car­ling­ford to help com­bat the on go­ing prob­lem with anti so­cial be­hav­iour at the week­ends.

Cllr John McGa­hon noted that com­mu­nity CCTV schemes had been dis­cussed at pre­vi­ously there were is­sues around GDPR. The com­mu­nity CCTV schemes were not fully funded, with com­mu­ni­ties hav­ing to put up 40% of the cap­i­tal cost. The run­ning costs of the scheme are met by the lo­cal au­thor­ity,
