SUSPENDED SENTENCEFOR THEFTS

-

A 54-year-old man who used a stolen credit card and debit card to make a number of purchases, has received a five-month suspended sentence.

Oghenerobh Majyn, 44 Drive Two, Muirhevnamór, pleaded guilty to the offences which occurred on the same night earlier this year.

The court heard all the transactions were of low value, amounting to €160 in total, and the defendant had that sum with him to offer in compensation.

He admitted taking a River Island wallet containing an Ulster Bank debit card and Mastercard credit card from Luna, Tierney Street, Ardee, on 29 July last.

Majyn then used the cards to make purchases in McDonald’s, Stapleton Place, Dundalk; Joe Traynor butchers; Tesco Extra; Maxol filling station, Dublin Road and Oriel service station.

Sgt Fintan McGroder said he has six previous convictions, including for assault causing harm and intimidation of witnesses/jurors.

Majyn’s solicitor Barry Callan added his client is married with four children. His mother died recently and he lost his job in The Authentic Food Company. He had been sending money home to Nigeria.

He is on €260 per-week social welfare. Judge Coughlan imposed a five-month sentence, suspended for five months, and warned the defendant not to appear before him again.

The €160 compensation was paid over, and legal aid granted. insulting behaviour and failing to comply with the direction of a garda at Dundalk Racecourse on 6 October last.

Solicitor Conor MacGuill said his client has €200 with him.

The case was adjourned to 23 January next for another €100 to be paid.
