Rare headed goal for McEleney

SUNDAY’S goal was the 59thof Patrick McEleney’s career but just the second he has scored with his head. The only previous time he has scored a header was also in the FAI Cup when he opened the scoring for Derry City in a 3-0 win over Drogheda Utd at the Brandywell in August 2015. The Derry native was making the 325thappearance of his career on Sunday and his 30thFAI Cup start. In what was his fifth final, he has now won the competition twice (2012 and 2018).

Hoare on target

ON what was his 60thappearance for Dundalk on Sunday, Sean Hoare popped up with just his fourth goal for the club. His early header was his second in the FAI Cup, having scored a long range screamer in the victory over Crumlin Utd last season.

Penalty record

DUNDALK have now conceded more penalties against Cork City (4) than any other team in Stephen Kenny’s tenure. Neil Doyle has given more penalties against Dundalk (6) than any other referee. Sunday’s penalty was the first to be given away by Sean Hoare. The last time Dundalk conceded a penalty in an FAI Cup tie was back in 2013 in the controversial semi-final defeat to Drogheda Utd at United Park. Kieran Sadlier’s penalty on Sunday was the only goal the Lilywhites conceded in this year’s competition.

Kenny equals McLaughlin’s haul

DUNDALK FC’s victory over Cork City on Sunday means manager Stephen Kenny has equaled the great Jim McLaughlin’s haul of eight major honours with the club. Kenny has now won four league titles, two FAI Cups and two EA Sports Cups in his time at Oriel Park while McLaughlin won three leagues, two FAI Cups and two League Cups between November 1974 and June 1983.

Fourth double for Dundalk

SUNDAY’S win over Cork City ensured a fourth double in the history of the club for Dundalk FC. The club had previously won the league and FAI Cup in the same season in 1979, 1988 and 2015. The 2-1 win over the Rebels means Dundalk have now won the FAI Cup 11 times. Only Shamrock Rovers (24) have won the competition more times.
