CBS beat Marist in Oriel Park showpiece

NOVEMBER 1988

-

DUNDALK CBS win the north-east section of the Leinster Colleges (U-18), beating neighbours and keen rivals the Marist 2-1 in Oriel Park.

Constant rain and poor visibility make conditions difficult but cheered on by a big crowd of students from each school the players serve up a thrilling encounter.

St Mary’s College strike first but are hauled back before the interval by a stronger outfit. CBS then hit the front shortly after the restart.

It is Leo Davis who gives the Marist an early lead, taking advantage of some hesitancy in the opposition defence, and the same player has a great opportunity minutes later to increase the advantage but shoots narrowly wide.

After the scare CBS, driven on by Niall Prenty and Irish schoolboy international Paul Johnston in midfield, equalise when Declan Reilly’s fine pass splits the defence for Brian Duffy to get the vital touch.

The winner, early in the second half is well executed. Ian Hazzard finds the end line from a short free and his low cross causes problems and allows Duffy to convert from close in for his second.

However, the CBS sits back on their lead, and the Marist sense a chance with Ultan McCabe, Paul Gaughran and Ciarán Kavanagh all prominent.

Kavanagh is denied by ‘ keeper Peter Drumgoole’s speed off the mark and Paul Gaughran shoots a great chance wide.
