Sinn Fein select candidates for 2019 local elections

-

Louth Sinn Féin have formally selected seven candidates for the Dundalk and Mid-Louth areas to run for the 2019 Local Council Elections.

At last week’s convention the three current councillors were selected for Dundalk South - Tomás Sharkey, Anne Campbell and Ruairí Ó Murchú. The latter two face election for the first time as they were both co-opted within the last 14 months. Cllr Campbell and Cllr Ó Murchú replaced councillors Jennifer Green and Kevin Meenan respectively, and they paid tribute to them at the convention.

In Dundalk Carlingford, the two sitting councillors Edel Corrigan and Antóin Watters were selected together with a new face, Eugene Garvey, an activist from the St Nicholas’ area of Dundalk.

Speaking after the convention, Mr Garvey said: ‘I am humbled and honoured to have been put forwarded and subsequently selected by the Halpenny Worthington Watters Cumann and look forward to joining the Sinn Féin team on Louth County Council.’

At the 2014 Local elections, Sinn Féin lost out on the third seat in Dundalk/Carlingford area by the narrowest of margins when Fianna Fail won it over JJ Quigley by just 4 votes. They hope that Eugene Garvey will be able to take that third seat in 2019.

In Mid-Louth Pearse McGeough was selected to re-run with his running mate not yet determined.

All selected candidates’ names will now be sent to the party head quarters to be ratified.
