QUAY remains winless and indeed pointless despite twice leading in this meeting of the bottom two at Sandy Lane in the under-12 premier division.
The visitors probably deserved a point but their barren run was extended to 11 games with this result after scoring early to take the lead and then on the stroke to regain it, with Conall Courtney finding the net in style in each instance.
However, Shay Neary proved to be Rock’s matchwinner with a second half brace of goals after a high speculative delivery from near half-way by Jamie Soraghan had tied the score at one all mid way through the first period.
Goalkeeper Max Ruksil got his hands to the ball, as he also did for Neary’s two goals but couldn’t prevent it from crossing his line on each occasion.
Courtney with his bag of tricks tried all he could to conjure up an equaliser, but his efforts just didn’t come off although he came ever so close.
He ran through onto a pass into the Rock penalty box to strike it low and away from goalkeeper McCutcheon into the net with barely five minutes gone to open the scoring.
Another impressive Quay performer Conor Hynes could have increased his side’s lead.
But at the other end the skilful Alex O’Kane was an equal handful, and he beat a defender with a lovely piece of skill to go past him into the box to force Ruksil into an improvised save with his foot at the base of the near post.
Neary offered evidence of the menace that he posed before Soraghan grabbed a surprise equaliser, but Courtney shocked the home side by regaining the lead for his side following a throw- in seconds before the half-time whistle.
