THE Dunleer Tidy Towns held their annual awards ceremony in Grove House on Thursday 14th July to a capacity Audience.

The proceeding­s began with an address by Aoife Lawler planning, Louth County Council who outlined the funding applicatio­n for an urban renewal plan for Dunleer. This was partnershi­p between Louth County Council, Dunleer Tidy Towns and Dunleer Developmen­t Board. The results of this funding applicatio­n will be known in a few months’ time.

The Award for the best kept estate for 2018 went to Woodlands Estate in Dunleer keeping a keen eye on litter, dog fouling and keeping the greens neatly trimmed and flowers well maintained. The Louth Bee Keepers Associatio­n also planted 3 trees on the Estate during the Springtime.

The Most improved Estate in Dunleer for 2018 went to Shamrock Grove who really got up and moved ahead and maintained the estate quite well for 2018 .

The Volunteers of the year also went to Pat Roche of the Tidy Towns Committee and Micky Dunne from Shamrock Grove being voted Volunteers of the Year 2018 .

The various awards were handed out and the winners were:

1. Best terraced Garden – Tony Corrigan, Beechwood Drive

2. Best Bio Diversity Garden Erandi Langeveldt, Dundalk Road.

3. Best Compact Garden – Hugh and Colette Murphy – School Lane.

4. Best Plants Gardens- Paul and Helen Cor- rigan – School Lane.

5. Best Novelty Garden – Declan and Rosaleen McKeown, Dundalk Road.

6. Best Low Maintenanc­e Garden- George/ Louise Harmon, Beechwood Drive.

7. Best outdoor accessory garden – Paddy and Kitty Bowden, Drumcar Road.

The Overall winner of the Garden Competitio­n for 2018 was a small Area known as ‘Little Italy’ just off the Ardee Road. It is the passage way between two houses which is planted and maintained by Ita King, Margaret McConnoran and Francie Marry. It is a little mem in the middle of the town.

An appreciati­on award was made to Adrienne Carroll for her great efforts in detailing the history of buildings in the town. Scoil Ui Mhuiri also accepted an achievemen­t award.

The best Tidy Towns shop front went to Amici Flowers.

The night was a great success with a full outline of the achievemen­ts for the Dunleer Tidy Towns in the last 12 months. Again Dunleer received a great mark for their efforts going up by 9 points again after a similar success last year. They are now in reach of their first Bronze medal which should arrive in the next few years putting them among the best in the country.

The Audience was addressed by Declan Breathnach TD who gave great praise for the work of the committee during the past 12 months as did Fergus O’Dowd TD who spoke of lending his support to this and other events in Dunleer. Cllrs Colm Markey and Jim Tenanty also attended.
