LOUTH STUDENTS FINALISING THEIR YOUNG SCIENTIST PROJECTS

With students from five Louth schools taking part, organisers of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition are gearing up for the 55th anniversar­y of the national competitio­n.

Louth students will be among thousands exhibiting at the event which kicks off in the RDS Arena, Dublin tomorrow ( Wednesday) January 9th and will run until Saturday 12th January.

The exhibition brings together some of the country’s brightest young minds as they compete to take home the title of the BT Young Scientist & Technologi­st(s) of the Year 2019.

Students from three schools in the Dundalk area are among the finalists: St. Vincent’s Secondary School, Dundalk Grammar and Bush Post Primary.

St. Vincent’s have three projects entered including: ‘A Fourier Analysis of Mathematic­al Wave Patterns in Irish dancing’ and ‘ The Marshmallo­w Challenge’ focused on business and sporting groups team building.

Students are also examining a modern phenomenon with a look at ‘Female Centric Bullying Terminolog­y.’

Bush Post Primary have four projects in the final including: ‘Are we witnessing the downfall of the Catholic Church?’

With Britain’s exit from the European Union set to dominate the headlines over the coming weeks and months, students examined ‘How Brexit will affect businesses on both sides of the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.’

Other projects feature an analysis of caffeine affects performanc­e, and the impact of global warming on crops. Dundalk Grammar have one project entered in the competitio­n, using ultrasound to help the visually impaired navigate.’

With four packed exhibition halls full of exciting things to see and do, the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition has something to stimulate the minds of every generation.
