Gardai attended the scene, and an ambulance was called and he was later transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Investigating gardaí are reported to have identified a person known to the victim as a suspect in the case, and gloves as well as a bottle were recovered near the scene.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau also carried out a forensic examination of the scene.
Gardai also launched a number of enquiries after four burglaries were reported in the Avenue road and Inner Relief road area over the last week.
A small amount of money was stolen in one of the incidents, and the houses targetted had been ransacked in what gardai believe was the search for cash
A spokesman explained that the house had been broken into when the occupants were out. He also warned householders to be vigilant, ensuring that doors and windows are securely locked
