The song goes that it#s a long way to Tipperary but for Premier native John Kelly it’s an even longer way (5 more weeks) to the end of the 14 hole Eclectic League to which he has made an electricfying start. John (12) operating in the 10-12 handicap section was one over with a 56 which left him with the best score of a nett 44. John edged out fellow sectional player Christopher Reel (11) who finished with a nett 46.

But the best haul of birdies was posted by Jamie Duffy (4) who returned 6 on his way to a nett 45 and emerge as clear leader of the 0-9 handicap Section.

In form Senior Seamus McCoy (15) also made a blistering start to the competition ending with a 9 under nett score of 46 which left him 2 shots clear of Dundalk’s Niall McEneaney (16) nett 48 in the 13-16 handicap Section.

The first week of the Eclectic has proved good for the Dundalk boys as Noel Magill (17) has taxied into top spot in the 17-22 handicap Section with Brendan O Rourke (19) as his back seat passenger in second spot 2 shots in arrears.

As was said in the opening paragraph it’s a long way to the finish line before all of the top 3 overall places in each of the 4 playing handicap Sections will be decided.

Hazards may have been replaced by penalty areas in golf but our own John Joe Hassard is determined not to let it be forgotten as he claimed first place in the Seniors on Thursday morning to grab the headlines. Noel Magill was second with fellow Dundalker Charlie McShane lighting up the podium in third place.

Seniors will continue this Thursday morning at 10 am and visitors are welcome to join them if they would like 12 holes of golf.
