BABY BORN IN LOUTH HOSPITAL
JANUARY 2004
A baby is born at the Louth county hospital despite the maternity unit being closed for three years.
The North Eastern Health Board (NEHB) confirms that the mother, a non-national, arrives in labour at the ante-natal clinic, held in the Dundalk hospital.
‘ The delivery is well advanced, and the baby is born soon after the woman arrives,’ says a NEHB spokeswoman.
The baby girl and her mother are transferred by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
‘A nurse travels with them to Drogheda, and all the correct procedures are followed,’ adds the spokeswoman.
She concludes that mother and child are in full health and reported to be doing well.
Since the controversial closure of the maternity unit in March, 2001, a number of births take place in the Louth county hospital, the last being a baby born to a teenage mother in August, 2003. ROSIE Lambe (Knockbridge AC) pushes on from the gun to once more win the ladies section of Rás na hÉireann in Dunleer.
She is followed home by Catherine Mallon (Dunboyne) and Eilish Foyle (Dunleer).
Dunleer retains the team title, their 19th in all. Eilish is backed by Mary O’Brien, Mary McConville and Rosaleen Clare.
Brendan Doyle ( West Wicklow) records one of his best victories to end up a convincing winner of the 20th Rás.
Over heavy conditions on an 8,000m course, Doyle starts to make ground on pre-race favourite Paul Le Blanc during the second lap and at the halfway mark kicks clear.
Tommy Cunning, in 6th place, leads Fr Murphy’s to team glory, from Glenmore and Mountpleasant.
Other winners include, U-10 Boys C. McCarthy (Glenmore), Peter McGinnity (Glenmuir), U-16 Girls Lorraine Murphy (Kilkerley), Junior ladies Karen O’Hanlon (Kilkerley), Novice Men D. Smith (Kilkerley).
