- Therese Whelan 1937-2018

THERESE Whelan, Beechmount Drive, Dundalk, who has passed away, was a lady who adored her grandchildren and for whom cookery was a big part of her life.

She died peacefully in St Peter’s nursing home, Castlebellingham, on 27 December, 2018, aged 81.

Therese was one of eight children of the late Tom and Winnie Muckian, and attended Castletown girls’ school.

She subsequently worked for a number of years as a supervisor in the Ecco.

Therese married Jack Whelan in 1963 and they went on to have two children, Jean and Tom; while Therese was also delighted at the subsequent arrival of her three grandchildren.

She was very talented at cooking and baking. Indeed, cooking was her life and her family enjoyed the benefit of her skill.

Therese was also adept at making ornaments and other decorations for the kitchen.

She loved watching her favourite programmes on television and enjoyed a smoke.

Throughout her long life she was a great neighbour and friend to many people.

Therese is survived by her husband, Jack; daughter, Jean; son, Tom (Dublin); grandchildren, Jamie, Jake and Conor; son-in-law, Jimmy Martin; daughter-in-law, Wendy McGurk; sisters, May, Jo and Catherine; brother, Thomas; her great friend and neighbour, Karen Doyle; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents; and sisters, Pat, Úna and Majella.

After reposing in McGeough’s funeral home, Jocelyn Street, her remains were removed to St. Fursey’s Church, Haggardstown, where the funeral Mass was celebrated by parish priest Fr Pádraig Keenan.

Readings were by Lisa Murray and Tom Muckian; while prayers of the faithful were led by Jamie Martin, Rachel Clarke, Gerry Stewart and Elisha Naylor.

A cushion bearing Therese’s name was brought up by Karen Doyle. Margaret Rafferty and Ann Monaghan carried the bread and wine to the altar.

Music was provided by soloist, Sarah McCourt and organist, Brendan McCourt.

Burial took place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

The Month’s Mind Mass takes place in St Fursey’s Church, Haggardstown, at 11am on Sunday, 27 January.
