LAST week’s action in the Dundalk and District Dart League concentrated on the open shield, the local equivalent of the FA Cup, and there were surprises here too - with a couple of major upsets to match any that have occurred in that famous competition over the years.

Chief among these was Callans from the second division overcoming premier league Malthouse 4-3, with Eugene Traynor’s Blayney Road outfit rising to the occasion in resolute style to earn themselves a quarter-final slot.

Another big shock was from the Bodhran Blues, struggling in division one, who hammered premier league semi-finalists the Punters Sharks 4-0.

Nothing went right for the favourites on the night, with brothers Paul and David Kelly taking the plaudits for the victors.

The clash of the heavyweights produced another win for Avenue Celtic against the Bodhran. This time 4-2 was the scoreline and as usual when these two meet, the scoring was of an exceptional standard.

Holders Uncle Toms Cabin also advanced with a comfortable 4-0 win against the Clans and Harrys Bar had a fright against the Bodhran Eagles before eventually emerging victorious 4-3.

The Stags Head and the Punters Panthers are both chasing the division one title and the former have definitely held the upper hand in recent weeks.

However, having routed them 6-0 in the league, they were made to work for a 4-2 triumph in the shield, with Stephen Shields and Brendan Nash to the fore.

A good night for the Stags was made complete by the Stags Blue’s narrow 4-3 victory over a game Commercial Celtic in the only all division two clash, with Jack Riordan in top form in his match.

The remaining tie saw the Commercial Classics having too much fire for Courtneys, eventually seeing their opponents off by a 4-1 margin.

Aidan Thompson led the way with a 2-1 win over Tony Reynolds, who did manage the consolation of the only 180 of the night.

It’s back to league action this week.
