Border group seek funding

- By OLIVIA RYAN

THE award winning lobby group Border Communities Against Brexit have launched a ‘Go Fund Me’ page in a bid to raise funds for their campaign to prevent a hard border as a result of Brexit.

The group, which is made up of people living and working along the border recently held a huge demonstration on the old Dundalk-Newry Road to highlight how a hard border might impact on the local community.

The protest, which made inter- national headlines, featured mock ‘customs’ checkpoints in a scene reminiscent of the 19070s and 80s along the border.

A Berlin Wall style blockade was also enacted to highlight how restrictive any physical infrastructure could be.

Now, the group are appealing for the public’s support to keep the campaign going

In an online appeal for support through ‘ Go Fund me’ the group have asked for supporters to ‘please give what you can to assist us in our fight against Brexit.’

‘Up to now we have funded this campaign largely from our own pockets., so any contributions would be welcome.’

The group, which was formed shortly after the referendum vote in 2016 has campaigned north and south, at Westminster, and at the European parliament.

In July 2017 the European Parliament awarded the group a European Citizen’s Prize.
