Dundalk student at European parliament
DUNDALK student Caoihe McCormick made her debut at the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week.
Caoimhe was the overall winner of the Youth Leadership Rotary Challenge Awards in the region and the prize was a fully paid trip to Strasbourg where she took part in some key debates, where she was broadcast on the parliament’s big screen!
She met with TDs, MLAs and MEPs who answered questions she posed of them about policy and decision making as well as those about the life of a politician. She worked with other young Irish people there and they discussed Security and Human Rights.
Caoimhe was nominated spokesperson for her group and went on to present her group’s proposals to the whole Euroschola audience made up of young people from every European country.
‘It was a most amazing experience. I can’t believe that I got the opportunity to see the workings of three different government groups.’
She added: ‘It was so new Dundalk student Caoihe McCormick (centre) speaking in the EU parliament and right on the big screen.
and exciting and I am so grateful to Rotary Ireland for the opportunity.’
As part of the programme, St. Louis student Caoimhe also spent some time in Dublin and Stormont experiencing the life of a parliamentarian.
School principal Michelle Dolan praised Caoimhe for representing her school, town and county, adding that she was not surprised that Caoimhe was spokesperson for her group.
‘Caoimhe is such an articulate student, well able to express herself and full of assurance.
We are very proud of her achievement and will no doubt see her debating again perhaps in a future career as a politician herself. She was a wonderful ambassador for St Louis, and Rotary Ireland.’
