State aided 121 funerals in Louth

Louth had the third highest number requiring help with funeral or burial costs according to figures from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

Last year, 121 families in Louth received €228,131 to help with the funeral costs of loved ones. This was the highest amount after Dublin and Cork.

A total of 2,881 payments were made last year to assist funerals and burials nationwide amounting to €5,457,828, according to the two department­s.

These exceptiona­l needs payment, which are means tested, are make to help meet essential, once-off expenditur­e, which a person could not reasonably be expected to meet out of their weekly income.
