Impressive Mattock hunt down Rovers to secure derby bragging rights

MATTOCK Rangers began their season with an impressive display that saw them defeat neighbours Hunterstow­n Rovers in Collon on Saturday evening.

The teams each managed nine points over the hour but it was Mattock’s eye for goal that saw them through in the end with David Reid, Brian Corcoran and Ben McKenna all finding the net.

It was McKenna who scored the first goal of the game in the opening half and that gave his side a four-point advantage at the break as they led by 1-6 to 0-5. Glen Mathews kicked three points for Rovers to keep them in contention.

The home side stretched their advantage through a Corcoran goal as Hunterstow­n were unable to get a grip on the game. A third goal from a David Reid penalty late in the game sealed victory for Mattock.

The visitors based their success on a strong first half display that saw them build up an 11-point lead. O’Neill’s first goal came on 14 minutes to help his side get on top but three points from Shane Byrne kept Roche in contention. The second quarter belonged to the Tullyallen side and just on the stroke of half time Lynch added a second goal to secure a 2-8 to 0-3 lead at half time.

The Faughart men improved in for P Birch, Ben Markey for B Quaile, Hugh Donnelly for J Condon, Cathal Clarke for C Fleming, Cillian Hickey for D Bannon.

Two first half goals from William Woods were instrument­al in the what was a deserved win for the Ballygassa­n side.

Playing with the breeze the Barrs were 11 points up at half time and moving well as they were rewarded with a 2-8 to 0-3 advantage.

The Martin’s used the elements to reduce the arrears with in the second half with the help of a Conor Morgan goal but it was too little too late.

The hosts were seven points to the good at the break but had to withstand a second half revival before coming out on top.

There wasn’t much between the teams throughout this game but it was Lee Martin’s eye for goal that proved decisive as his side went in at the break leading by 2-4 to 0-3.

The Omeath men raised their game in the second period and gradually chipped away at the lead but in the end time ran out before they could complete the comeback.

Na Piarsaigh led 1-3 to 0-5 at the interval, their goal coming mid-way through the half from David Egan. Lannleire stayed in touch courtesy of some fine long-range points from centre forward, Paul Callan.

The game was effectivel­y decided in the opening ten minutes of the second period when Na Piarsaigh bagged two “majors” from David Boyle and Eamonn McAuley. Lan- nleire were further hampered by a couple of injuries in the second half whilst luck proved elusive during the game, with the wood-work denying them on a couple of occasions with only a point resulting.
