15s’ loss from jaws of victory
BIRR DUNDALK 38 34
LEADING 29-7 at one stage in a match where they would score six tries and play with wind advantage in the second half, Dundalk were caught in the last minute by a much more cohesive and aggressive Birr team who were full value for their win.
Although building a commanding lead, Dundalk never looked in control, but what will disappoint them most is the complete failure to defend both individually and as a unit, particularly in the second half and when it was needed most.
You had to admire a team like Birr who had some fine individual performers and had a huge desire to work for each other, all the more admirable considering they were barely able to field a team, with just one reserve.
Dundalk’s focus will now turn to the Leinster League Division 1 campaign where a quarter-final in March awaits, as does the opportunity to show if they are ever going to learn from the consistent shortcomings in their game.
Scoring has never been an issue for Dundalk, but unfortunately the same can be said for the opposition!
