-

Carlingford’s Ghan House is among those shortlisted for an award at this year’s Georgina Campbell Irish Breakfast Awards, in association with Fáilte Ireland.

The winners will be announced later today (Tuesday) at the Irish Breakfast Awards in the InterContinental Dublin, which will be attended by up to 200 representatives from the hospitality industry, food writers and food organisations and with special guest, chef Neven Maguire.

Each establishment on the shortlist has been commended by Georgina Campbell’s independent assessment team for creating a breakfast menu that stands out from the crowd.

Speaking ahead of the Awards, renowned food writer and author, Georgina says: ‘ Some of my most memorable meals have been around the breakfast table, yet it has for too long been the Cinderella of dining experiences. The Irish Breakfast Awards aim to change all that, by encouraging establishments to create menus that introduce visitors to our vibrant food culture by showcasing the best local and Irish foods and crediting our dedicated local producers.

‘Now in their third year, it’s amazing to see how Irish establishments are shaping the breakfast culture on our little Island with hotels, guest houses, visitor attractions and cafés embracing the uniqueness that the first meal of the day can offer as a dining experience.

‘ Those shortlisted in the Georgina Campbell Breakfast Awards are setting standards that others in the Irish food industry should strive towards.’ This year Glenmore AC are celebrating 50 years of athletics in the Cooley Peninsula founded in 1969 by five local men, Owen McCann RIP, Mickey McBride RIP, Danny Ferguson, Kevin Barry and Vincie Savage. The desire was to offer an alternative to other sports for the local lads who were involved in football and tug of war in the summer months. From the time training began, there are lots of stories to be told over the fifty years of where their training venues were, from Petie Rice’s Sheds, to their own building known as The Hut in Glenmore, to their facilities in the Mullaghbuoy Community Centre and Glenmore AC club rooms, to their current six lane flood lit athletics track at Bush Post Primary School.

The club will celebrate throughout the year and hope to present a book of the 50 years at their social night on Friday, October 18, in the Four Seasons Hotel, Carlingford. More details of that event to follow.

The club are hosting the first of their three annual races on Sunday March 3 when they hold the Kearney and McBride races. A full juvenile program starts at 12 noon with the senior 5k road race starting at 1pm outside the Bush School gates taking the route to Maguire’s Cross and onwards to Artullymore and returning up by Monksland school. It is then back to the track with one lap to complete the 5k Course.

This year there will be commemorative medals to celebrate the club’s centenary for the first 200 registered online with Myrunresults. The club invites all runners, joggers, from the running community and past and present members to come out on Sunday March 3 and acknowledge what the club has achieved over the years. They invite all support on route to cheer the athletes on and back to the canteen for after race refreshments.
