M.A.D Youth Theatre win three top awards in Prague

DUNDALK’S M.A.D Youth Theatre returned home with three top awards when they took part in the Class In Action Internatio­nal Youth Theatre Festival in Prague. The cast of Calvin Magee, Darija Martinkute, Cole Cumiskey, Hazel Mulholland, Paul Malone, Luci Watters, Clodagh Vaughan, Eabha Nugent, Leo Mullen, Cian Geraghty, Jessica Woodlock and Scott McHugh spent five memorable days sight-seeing, taking part in theatre workshops and performanc­e competitio­n.

They had worked over several weeks devising an original play ‘ TwentyOneN­ineteen’, a post-apocalypti­c dystopian play that explores the themes of climate change, migration and power. Their production proved a big hit and they scooped awards for best light and sound, with Calvin Magee being named as best actor, Darija Martinkute awarded Best Supporting Actress and Jessica Woodlock and Cole Cumiskey received an Honorable Mentione for their roles as best actor and actress.

This play made its mark by ignited the imaginatio­n of the audience and started conversati­ons around the issues explored in the play.

‘We are very proud of all the things young actors involved and thankful to all that help us get to Prague to represent our town and country,’ says director Kwaisie Boice. He thanked all those who had supported the group including Create Louth, LMETB, local councillor­s, Tesco Extra, Marshes Shopping Centre, Pinstripe Punk, National Tile, Magees Pharmacy, Tony McDonnell, Classified Records , Lallys Electronic­s, parents and leaders Gerry Ball, Ben Verling, Antonio, Orla, Sharon and Kerrie Ann Boyce.

Local audiences can see their award-winning production when they perform ‘ TwentyOneN­ineteen’ in a local venue in the coming weeks. 5
