Boxing clever in top quality championsh­ips

LOUTH OPEN CHAMPIONSH­IPS

THE Louth Open Boxing Championsh­ip took place over the weekend at O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club, Dundalk.

The venue for the event was perfect with an Olympic size ring and seating for all spectators.

The Championsh­ip has grown steadily over the last numbers of years and this year saw 284 boxers enter the contest. Both male and female boxers from 27 boxing clubs spread over seven counties took part in the competitio­n.

Quarter finals and semi-finals were held on Friday and Saturday, with some finals on Saturday, but most finals held on Sunday.

There were some thrilling and hard fought contests and some names to watch out for in the future. Notable performanc­es came from boxers varying ages and both boys and girls.

Louth clubs performed very well during the competitio­n with some notable performanc­es from new Louth Champions including;

Shea Quinn, Peter McLoughlin, Obafeimi Agbakiaks, Fionn Dines,

Paul Eldershaw, Caoland Murphy, Jack McCarthy, Favour Chiquozi, Connall Byrne, Conal Treanor, Ellen Tumelty, Brianna and Aiden Ryan of Dealgan Boxing Club.

Tadhg Nevin, Adam McKenna, Ronan Thompson, Liam Downey and Davy Nevin, from Holy Family Boxing Club, Fionn Dines of Dealgan Boxing Club.

Luca Coirie, Kevin McKeever, Conor Larkin and Alex Finnegan from Tredagh Boxing Club.

Claudia Guijta and Tighe Bedford of Drogheda Boxing Club.

Dylan Little of St. Cianan’s, Matthew Cunningham, Belaal El Yaquot and Dean McGuirk of O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club.

One to watch is new Louth Champion young Antonio Bozkaya from Aston Village, Drogheda, who is boxing with East Meath Boxing Club. Antonio boxed very well against a tough opponent from Camlough in his final on Saturday.

Best juvenile male boxer of the Championsh­ip was awarded to Louth Champion 33kg Ronan Thompson of Holy Family Boxing Club, Drogheda. Ronan boxed with skill beyond his years on both Saturday and Sunday, one to watch in the future.

Best juvenile female boxer of the Championsh­ip was awarded to Louth Champion 49kg Ellen Tumelty of Dealgan Boxing Club, Dundalk.

In the final Ellen’s opponent was Anemore Lazetta from Drogheda Boxing Club. Both girls gave it their all and the crowd showed their appreciati­on for both boxers with the loudest chap and cheer of the Championsh­ip when the bell rang at the end of the last round.

Louth County Board would like to thank all the officials and judges for giving their time over the weekend and also a big thank you to O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club for making everyone feel so welcome and providing an excellent venue for the Championsh­ip.
