Art treasures on display

-

A selection of artworks owned by Louth County Council are now on public display in the Taisce Lú exhibition in The Basement Gallery giving the public the opportunity to see an exciting collection of work by well-known national and local artists, many of whom have international profiles.

The exhibition was curated by Claire Halpin whose work is included in the exhibition and who previously worked on a project bringing pieces from the collection to schools in the county.

She has selected a diverse range of artworks - paintings, prints, drawings, mixed media, photography and sculpture, with a view to allowing the viewer to engage with the collection which belongs to the county.

There’s work by internationally acclaimed artists such as Adrian+Shane, Jackie Nickerson, Betty Newman Maguire, Frances Lambe and John Behan.

Acting Arts Officer Mary Capplis said the collection reflects Louth County Council’s committment to supporting visual artists, especially emerging artists. She noted that much of the collection is on view in various offices belonging to the Council as well performance areas and public spaces throughout the county. She stressed that Taisce Lú belongs to the people of Louth and paid tribute to those who had put it together - Brian Harten, Denis D’Arcy and Michele Haechler and thanked the Arts Council, the officials and elected members of Louth County Council for their commitment to the visual arts over the years which had enabled Taisce Lú to grow and develop into a noteworthy and living collection.

The exhibition runs until February 15.
