Thai honour for Dundalk man

DUNDALK born Brendan Rogers was recently presented with one of Thailand’s highest honours in recognitio­n for his work as Ireland’s first resident Ambassador to Thailand.

Brendan, who is currently the Deputy General Secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ireland, was presented with Knight Grand Cross First Class of the Order of the White Elephant by HE Ambassador Pisano Suvanjata by Royal Command at the Royal Thai Embassy in London. ‘ This is one of Thailand’s highest honours and I was deeply honoured and privileged to receive the award,’ said Brendan.

The citation recognised the work he did as Ireland’s first resident Ambassador to Thailand from 2014 to 2018, saying he had ‘proved to be the people’s Ambassador and a real practition­er’ who had left behind an’invauable legacy’ and built up the friendship between the two countries. ‘He was behind many major milestones, most notably the opening of the Irish Embassy in Bangkok in 2014.

Awards were also made to the brave cave divers who helped save the lives of the Thai football team and their coach who were trapped in the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai Province.’
