Evidence was given that the defendant collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle on a country road. A number of people, including children, were taken to hospital.

The fire brigade was at the scene and when gardaí arrived both drivers were being assessed in the rear of an ambulance.

McAlinden subsequently provided a blood sample which showed a reading of 160.

The defendant, who is fully indemnified, has two children and doesn’t work outside the home.

On the drink driving charge, Judge McKiernan imposed a €300 fine and three-year disqualification to commence on 1 May next. The dangerous driving charge was taken into consideration.
