CLOVERHILL

WITH two rounds of the 12-hole Eclectic League remaining, pre-competition and bookies odds-on favourite Graham Johnston (17) - appropriately on the weekend that was in it - stormed to the top of the individual table.

With Storm Ciara dictating that there would be no Sunday play in this week-long repeater competition, during the week and on Saturday especially there was increased participation as players had their eye on the weather as well as the competition tables.

Graham has broken into the 20s having exhausted his massive 17 shots over the Par 45 shortened Green Course and sits with a nett 28 which is two clear of Kieran Crummy (10) and Martin Hollywood (13). The trio of Frank Ryan (10), Nial Smyth (10) and Noel McParland (11) are in joint third place on a nett 31.

In Handicap Section 1-6 Paddy Malone (5) and Stephen Markey (6) - on nett 35 - are joint leaders ahead of second-placed Daniel Hughes (4), with David Hamill (4) and Benny Tierney (6) heading the chasing group.

In Handicap Section 7-9 James Carragher (9) enjoyed a good week as he climbed up to the top of the section on a nett 32 which is a shot clear of Club Captain Justin Byrne (7), Colin McParland (7) and Liam O Hare (9), with third-placed Barry McKeown (9) a further shot behind.

In Handicap Section 10-13 it was also a very good week for Kieran Crummy (10) who came out of the pack to join Martin Hollywood (13) as joint leaders of this Section on a nett 30. The leading duo hold a one-shot lead over Frank Ryan (10) and Nial Smyth (10) who in turn are a shot clear of John Kelly (11), Shane Grant (12), Shane Muckian (13) and Noel McParland (11).

In Handicap Section 14-19 overall individual leader Graham Johnston (17) has opened up a two-shot lead over Brendan O Rourke (15), with an ever-improving Aidan Grant (19) on the podium in third place.

Club Captain Justin Byrne will host his Drive-in on Sunday March 1. The timesheet for the scramble to follow the drive-in is now open and members are asked to get their names down early to facilitate the make-up of the teams.

A reminder to all member that all members must have their GUI & insurance paid to the club on or before the drive-in as the golfing season gets under way officially the following week. Only members with their GUI paid in full will be eligible to receive Avada Golfer of the Year points once the competition year commences on March 7th.

The opening round of the sixweek Seniors Spring League began last Thursday in lovely playing conditions. It was our own ‘real McCoy’ Seamus who led them all a merry dance as he took top spot with a return of 28 points for the 12 holes. Seamus finished a point ahead of Raymond Kelly, with John Joe Hassard back in third. Round two of the league is this Thursday at 10am.
