LAMBS KILLED BY DOG PACK

May 1990

-

A plea is made to dog owners to keep their animals in overnight after a pack kills 13 lambs and three sheep on a farm on successive nights.

The incidents occur in Dromiskin, and on the first occasion the dogs go into a field and kill six lambs and three sheep.

The following night neighbours are alerted by noise in the field but are unaware what is going on as seven lambs are lost, and almost every other one is injured. Four of those are not expected to survive.

It is estimated the financial cost to the farmer is £50 per lamb and £70 for each sheep with no comeback.

‘We are sure we know two of the dogs and their owners after following the dogs to Blackrock after catching them in the field,’ he says.

‘People should realise how dangerous loose dogs are at night. They will travel for miles to kill sheep.’

Dog owners are urged to keep them in at night and during the early morning when the canines are more likely to roam about the countryside.
