Aldi plans store after appeal victory

May 2000

-

INTERNATIONAL supermarket chain Aldi is granted planning permission, following an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, to demolish an existing filling station and build a food retail store at Lisdoo, Newry Road.

Dundalk urban council had refused permission for the development.

However, the board considers the proposed development ‘would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or of property in the vicinity, would not be prejudicial to public health, would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety and convenience and would, therefore, be in accordance with the proper planning and development of the area’.

The board lays down a number of planning requirements relating to water supply and drainage, the undergrounding of service cables, car-parking, advertising signage and landscaping, with which Aldi will have to comply.

The German discount giant operates 4,000 stores worldwide, and has already opened supermarkets in Ireland in Cork, Dublin and Letterkenny.

There are 250 outlets in Britain, the first of which opened in 1990.
