Local schools artistic road safety message

- By OLIVIA RYAN

FIRST class pupils from Castletown Girls National School and second class pupils from Scoil Mhuire na nGael, Bay Estate, have proven their artistic skill in a series of road safety competitions.

The talented young pupils in both classes have displayed their road safety abilities, reaching the final five of the Road Safety Authority’s national ‘Seatbelt Sheriff ’ and ‘High Glo Silver’ poster competitions.

Scoil Muire na nGael’s colouruful entry highlights the importance of high visibility clothing when using the roads. Set in space, it even features a friendly alien, who is helping to promote the road safety message.

Castletown Girls humourous take also stressed the vital importance of seatbelts, with the clear advice ‘Don’t be a Clown, Buckle Down’.

Both schools are looking for the help of local people to be in with a chance of winning first prize of €2,000 for their class.

Speaking about the success of the two Dundalk Schools, Adrian O’Sullivan, Road Safety Officer with Louth County Council said “It is never too early to start educating our young people on how to be safe on the road.’

He added: ‘ Good road behaviour is learned by example and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure we are setting the right example by wearing our seatbelts and making sure we are wearing high visibility clothing when out cycling or walking.’

He said that programmes like the Road Safety Authoritry’s ‘Seatbelt Sheriff ’ and ‘Hi- Glo Silver’ help to deliver the important message to the younger road users,

‘ They in turn help educate their family and friends on the importance of seatbelts and hi-visibility clothing.’

Adrian added: ‘ Huge congratulations to all the students and teachers in both schools who do such a great job in promoting road safety.’
