Williams on the move to Shels

-

FROM THE ARCHIVES: 20 YEARS AGO...

A deal to transfer goalkeeper Steve Williams to Shelbourne is ironed out. Dundalk is now awaiting final acceptance from the Dublin club.

The Lilywhites stand to receive a fee of £25,000, which represents an increase of £2,500 on the original offer.

Shelbourne initially seek to spread the payments over five years, but Dundalk negotiate an 18-month period instead, and also insert a ‘sell-on’ cause by which they will benefit if Williams moves to a professional club while with Shels.

He has one year left on his Dundalk contract after spending last season on loan at Tolka Park.

Williams doesn’t want to play in the First Division, and next year, under the Bosman ruling, would be free to move without Dundalk receiving a fee.

Under an arrangement with a debtor, the club will receive £10,000 of the fee.

Louth hurlers claim the National League Division 3 title with a 0-16 to 1-11 win over Longford in Mullingar.

The sides are level at the break, 0-6 apiece, after referee J.P. Gribben sends off Louth’s Gerard Connolly and Patrick Cullen from the opposition.

With a little more than ten minutes remaining, the Reds trail by two points, 1-11 to 0-12 but go on to register the last four points of the game.

David Dunne (2), Tony Corcoran and Collins Connolly are on target.

Louth: Eddie McArdle; David Black, Aidan Carter, John O’Flaherty; Paul Ward, Paul Dunne (0-4, 2f, two 65s), Diarmuid Murphy;

Ger Collins, Eddie Quigley (0-1); Diarmuid McCarthy, David Dunne (0-7, 5f), Paul Dyas; Tony Corcoran (0-2), Paul Sharkey (0-1), Gerard Connolly. Subs., Barry Murphy for McCarthy, Joe Kennedy for Sharkey, Donnach Callan for Collins, Collins Connolly (0-1) for Carter.

In darts, Martin McCartney, Dónal McDonnell and Jim McKevitt win the Matt Byron 3-a-side.

In the final at The Stag’s Head they get the better of Silvio Malocca, Andrew Makin and Frank Shevlin.
