CROWDS GATHER AT GYLES QUAY

- BY OLIVIA RYAN

Concerns have been raised about huge crowds gathering at scenic north Louth locations as lockdown measures begin to ease.

Fears were raised by one local man who contacted the Argus last week after spotting a large gathering of people at the pier along Gyles Quay.

He said there appeared to be no social distancing in place, and the majority of those present were not local.

Photographs showed well over one hundred people gathered along the pier, with some out on a jetski in the water.

North Louth Councillor Erin McGreehan warned people who were considering gathering at beaches in the area to be aware that guidelines and social distancing must be respected for the safety of all.

‘It is so important that we get to enjoy our beautiful amenities. But we must act responsibly, we are not living in normal times and we need to protect ourselves, our families, neighbours and our health service.’

She added: ‘We also need to show respect. Respect to our frontline workers, some of whom have died from contracting Covid.’

Cllr. McGreehan said she ‘ had heard that there was a serious lack of social distancing’ by those gathered at Gyles Quay.

‘ The sacrifices people have made over the past few months have been phenomenal, businesses have been destroyed, jobs lost. We will be living with the fall out of this pandemic for a long time to come, mental health issues, financial problems, health issues due to lack of screening etc.

Then we see people disregarding the rules that may prolong the lockdown and as a result prolong and cause more difficulties.’

She appealed to everyone to think before they travelled to scenic spots or take part in organised gatherings.

‘We need to act in solidarity so we all can get out of this lockdown nightmare as fast as possible. Large gatherings and no social distancing are putting this at risk.’

Following the large gathering, local people came across a huge amount of waste dumped, including beer bottles and waste from takeaway food.

Cllr. McGreehan added: There was an incredible amount of littering along the pier at the Quay. This is 100% unacceptable and it is disgusting. If you bring litter you should dispose of it.’
