Katie feels the burn on 100k!

ST. LOUIS STUDENT RAN 100K IN MAY AS PART OF HER GAA TEAM FUNDRAISER FOR OLOL

- By OLIVIA RYAN

JUNIOR Cert student Katie Ward had a lot to contend with as she raced to complete a 100k in May challenge.

The St. Louis pupil was busily finishing her school exams, while also pounding the pavements for the Naomh Fionnbarra GAA ‘1500 Kilometres in May’ run.

Katie is the youngest member of the team, but still managed to show true grit as she clocked up the kilometres every day, spurred on by her team mates!

‘It was difficult some days, as I was doing my exams at the same time, but I set myself a goal of between five kilometres and eight kilometres each day.’

Her advice for anyone undertaking a long distance run is ‘ to make a timetable early in the month and stick to it so you don’t leave too much to do at the end - and to enjoy the experience!’

‘I found that because of the exams I had a good bit to catch up at the end of the month which was tough,’ added Katie.

She also overcame a niggling injury from last year, which caused her some problems with her knee.

But she found the motivation to complete the challenge, thanks to some online support from the rest of the team.

Proud mum Lorraine explained the Naomh Fionnbarra ladies ran a combined 2000 kilometres last month, all to raise funds towards refurbishing a family room in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Overall the team raised an incredible €5000 for the vital facility.

One of the players, Deirbhile Osbourne even joined in all the way from Australia where she is currently on a gap year.

‘All of the girls did a fantastic job completing the challenge, and really helped to support one another through it,’ said Lorraine.

‘ They are also doing their training sessions online every Friday, which is great. I know that they all really miss being out on the field.’
