-

THIS year Ireland’s national day of free arts events for young people, Cruinniú na nÓg 2020, is going ahead with a host of on-line activities for children and teens on Saturday June 13.

Now in its third year, Cruinniú has previously been celebrated by youth participation in a wide variety of creative activities across the county. However this year it is slightly different. Due to public health restrictions, all events will be taking place online and on RTÉ television. In Louth, the Creative Ireland Team have collaborated to create an online TV show, and it all kicks off at 11am on Saturday

June 13 and everyone can get involved by logging into Creative Ireland LOUTH Facebook Page, where the programme will be streamed.

An Táin Arts Centre is presenting two projects, with lots more to watch, make and do on the day -kicking off on the activities on the Facebook page at 11am.

Big Stories from Little Worlds is a collection of children’s thoughts about this strange time which is currently being collated into a short audio documentary that will give a unique insight into how the pandemic has been interpreted by children in Ireland. This presentation of a work-in-progress will be performed by Will Guppy and Leah Rossiter. Created with content from children aged 3 to 12.

Artist Vivienne Byrne will show young viewers how to make a crankie - which is like television set, but cooler! Explore the crankie as pre-curser to film making and video, make your own crankie and video the story on your smartphone camera to share with friends and family. Perfect for children aged 8+

Other highlights of the TV Programme will include a film premiere ‘Selkie’ -a new story and film commission produced by Droichead Arts Centre. Also launching on the day will be Droichead Arts Centre’s Youth Focus Group Film Showcase, featuring short films made by local young people aged 13+.

The County Museum presents an animated Lego series ‘Legends of Louth’ based on Cuchullain. As jigsaws have increased in popularity during lockdown, why not take part in a Community Jigsaw? Interested - then watch Creative Spark’s ‘Bigger Picture’ segment on the day.

Artist and illustrator Caoimhe McCarthy, who is well known for her work as Little Twit Designs, has created a wonderful drawing inspired by the folk tales of our Wee County.

The picture will be divided into numbered pieces which can then be downloaded and printed out at home by participants, who are invited to colour them in. These can then be scanned or photographed and uploaded to Creative Spark’s website or tagged on social media. Staff will then reassemble all the entries to make a complete community jigsaw.

Dundalk Artist Miriam Fox and Louth County Archivist are collaborating with young people to explore local archives and create new artwork. Artist Raphael Hynes is hosting the Highlanes Gallery’s Online Drawing Workshop for 13-18 year the last few months. Louth County Libraries are co-ordinating a kite-making project, where viewers will learn how to make their own kite.
