Bridgie was a much-loved wife and mother
The death has taken place of Bridgie Thornton, Toberona, Dundalk, peacefully, on 3 May, 2020, in the wonderful care of Blackrock Abbey Nursing Home.
She was beloved wife of the late Joe and much-loved mother of Tom and daughter-in-law, Mary; and grandmother of Conor and Kevin.
Originally from McDermott’s Terrace on the Carrick Road, Bridgie was a daughter of the late Tom and Nan Larkin.
After attending St. Malachy’s Primary School and Dundalk Technical School, she started work as a secretary in Byrne & Maguire and later in Ovelle.
In her latter years Bridgie worked as a volunteer in Oxfam, Clanbrassil St. attending to customers, and she made lots of friends there.
She loved to chat, and built up great relationships with customers and colleagues.
Bridgie was very enthusiastic about politics, sport and current affairs and could hold a lengthy conversation on any of those subjects.
She enjoyed listening to the radio and reading newspapers, and another great interest of hers was baking. Cakes and pancakes were her specialities.
When she moved to Blackrock Abbey Nursing Home, she continued to participate in the weekly baking activity.
Blackrock Abbey was her second home and Bridgie was really happy there. She was extremely well cared for and loved.
Bridgie is survived by her son, Tom; daughter-in-law, Mary; grandchildren, Conor and Kevin; sister, Nancy Gyles; brother, Ray; niece, Jean O’Hanrahan; nephews, Jimmy Gyles and David Larkin; relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mary and brother, Tom.
After reposing overnight in McGeough’s funeral home, her remains were removed to St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church for funeral Mass celebrated by Fr. Richard Delahunty and Fr. Derek Ryan.
Music was provided by organist Trevor Clarke.
Burial took place afterwards in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castletown.
Bridgie’s Month’s Mind Mass was celebrated on Sunday, 31 May at 12.30pm on the webcam in St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church.
