Kelly to step in the ring in home town

-

FROM THE ARCHIVES: 15 YEARS AGO...

IT is announced that for the first time since turning professional Michael Kelly will box in his home town.

A gala dinner show is scheduled for the Fairways Hotel on 2 July when three professional and two amateur bouts will be on the card in the Táin suite following a five-course meal.

Since going pro at the beginning of last year the Legion Avenue boxer has a perfect three-from-three record but is frustrated at a lack of opportunities.

Two fights have fallen through over the last six months.

Kelly is trying to juggle organising the big night in Dundalk and training for the event itself from his Belfast base.

Blackrock striker David Ward accepts a one-year contract with new Irish League First Division champions Armagh Town, joining up with another Dundalk forward Anto Reilly.

Reilly plays a leading role in the successful charge to the title, notching eight goals in 10 matches since signing in January.

Meanwhile, Ward is keen for more game time.

He had 14 games with Ards last term.

He is doing his own stamina training and will link up with Armagh for pre-season on 14 July.

Mark Stanfield is rated a doubt for Louth’s All-Ireland qualifier after going off injured during his side O’Connell’s heavy defeat to Glyde Rangers in the senior football championship.

The full-forward is in considerable pain as he receives treatment behind the end-line following a right ankle injury as he attempts a shot in a crowded goalmouth in the 24th minute.

At that stage in Louth Village a dominant Glyde show four points in front and go on to lead by as many as eleven before it ends 0-14 to 1-4.

Elsewhere in the SFC there are victories for Kilkerley Emmets over Clan Na Gael, Mattock Rangers over Newtown Blues, while Naomh Mairtín prove too strong for Stabannon Parnells.

Shane Lennon scores 1-6 for Kilkerley against a Clans team down to fourteen from just before half-time when Barry O’Connor receives a second yellow card.
