FROM THE ARCHIVES: 20 YEARS AGO...
THE sixth annual Louth Vintners’ Federation raceday features a local winner, the Harry Rogers-trained Aljay in the 12-furlong handicap sponsored by the publicans.
Under Eddie Ahern, the 5/2 favourite travels smoothly throughout and can be called the winner as the field turns for home.
Aljay goes on to beat Alvaro by two-and-a-half lengths.
The featured Harp Lager Handicap Hurdle is taken by Kamactay who gets the better of favourite Drewstown Lady.
Asas from the Inniskeen stable of Gerry McArdle is fourth for Ruby Walsh.
Johnny Murtagh, Barry Geraghty, Pat Smullen and Conor O’Dwyer all partner winners on the card.
Pearse Celtic qualify for a third successive Clancy Cup Final with a convincing 3-0 win over First Division Glenmuir Utd.
The opening goal comes in the 20th minute when former Dundalk player Kieran Dunne heads an Alan Larkin header to the net.
Larkin again gets the assist as Gavin Greene makes it 2-0, and Greene rounds off the scoring with his second goal ten minutes from time.
After losing the last two finals to Muirhevnamór, Pearse Celtic will
be hoping to get it right next time against Quay Celtic.
Louth narrowly miss out to Dublin in the Leinster Junior Championship semi-final.
It finishes 1-7 to 1-6 in Croke Park, as The Reds squander a big opportunity.
They lead 1-4 to 0-2 at the break, thanks in the main to a goal and a couple of frees by Kevin Callaghan.
The scores dry up thereafter, but Dublin only lead for the first time with the last point of the game.
Louth are left to rue 13 wides, seven coming during a first half they dominate.
