New councillor and Senators appointed

TWO FORMER LOCAL COUNCILLORS TO TAKE UP SEATS IN THE SEANAD

- By OLIVIA RYAN

A number of changes are on the way at Louth County Council after two former councillors take up their seats in Seanad Eireann.

Former north Louth Councillor Erin McGreehan was nominated to the Seanad by Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin following his election as Taoiseach.

She was one of the new Taoiseach’s 11 nominees for the Senate.

‘I am hugely honoured and humbled. To be in the Oireachtas to represent your county is a phenomenal privilege one that I do not take lightly. I want to thank my supporters and to all those who have sent me good wishes since the announcement.’

She added: ‘ There is an incredible amount of work to do for the people of Louth. The costs of Covid are deep and Brexit is a looming serious threat to us here particularly in Dundalk and North Louth. I will be fighting for this region every single day.’

The newly appointed Senator McGreehan will join former Fine Gael councillor, John McGahon, who also takes up his seat in the Senate as the historic new government begins its first term.

With the departure of two councillors from the local authority, there are now two seats to be filled.

Progress is already being made in the selection of a candidate to fill Senator McGahon’s seat.

A number of nominations are in for the seat, including Craig Colgan, owner of Sailor Sharkeys barber shop on the Castletown Road.

Local woman Roisin Duffy (Ravensdale), who had an unsuccessful run in the 2019 local election, has also been put forward for the council seat.

John Reilly (Kilcurry) and Colman Ryan (Jenkinstown) are the other candidates having emerged at this stage.
