It is set in Michael James Flaherty’s public house in County Mayo during the early 20th century and tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father.

His arrival in the small community, causes great excitement. He is initially regarded as a hero and Flaherty’s young daughter Pegeen, is smitten with Christy, much to the dismay of her betrothed, Shawn Keogh. Pegeen is not alone, as the Widow Quin is on the look out for a new husband, while three village girls also have their eye on him and attempt to woo him with gifts.
