KILLING AT ITS VERY EXTREME
By Derek Molyneux and Darren Kelly, published by Mercier Press
This book essentially takes the reader to the heart of Dublin from October 1917 to November 1920, during the Anglo-Irish War. It details pivotal aspects at the outset, then the ramping up of the intelligence war, the upsurge in raids and assassinations.
However, incidents from outside the capital are also touched upon, such as for example June 27th, 1920 when Fermoy suffered under its British military garrison in retaliation for the kidnapping of Brigadier General Lucas by the IRA as he fished on the River Blackwater. The town was ransacked by 400 troops in revenge, killing one man and causing tens of thousands of pounds in damage. Nearby Lismore was also subjected to bombs and burnings.
