Molumby hoping to start v Slovakia

- KATIE GLAVIN

This Thursday the Republic of Ireland to play Slovakia in the European Championship play-off semi-final in Bratislava.

This game is crucial for Ireland, as the winner will advance to the final play-offs, facing either Northern Ireland or Boznia and Herzegovina on November 12.

Among Stephen Kenny’s 25 man squad is Cappoquin local Jayson Molumby, who made his senior international soccer debut with Ireland last month v Finland at the Aviva Stadium.

The midfielder put in a credible debut performance over 90 minutes. Hopes are high for Molumby, who also plays for Brighton and Hove Albion, with the big game looming closer and the chance to help take Ireland to the finals.

Martin Reddy of Cappoquin Railway FC, who is also Molumby’s uncle, told TheAvondhu this week about the club’s support for Molumby who began his career at Cappoquin Railway FC.

“Anyone you speak to, if you’re speaking about soccer, Jayson’s name always comes up,” he said.

While sports are going ahead behind closed doors for the moment, Mr Reddy said that they are all still looking forward to watching Jayson play on TV.

“Obviously we’re looking forward to seeing him. It would be brilliant if he could get his first competitive cap, but it’s brilliant that he even made the squad anyway,” Mr Reddy added.

History of playing away games is not in the Republic’s favour, but we can all only hope for a win. Reports are that Seamus Coleman will not be playing because of injury is disappointing, although this gives Matt Doherty an opportunity at full back.

The game kicks off at 7.45pm Irish time on Thursday and will be shown live on RTÉ 2 with coverage starting at 7pm.

Next Sunday at the Aviva, Stephen Kenny’s team play Wales in the Nations League and on Wednesday, October 14 the team is to play away to Finland, also in the Nations League.
