Council seeks construction firm for 17 houses in Doneraile

- NIALL O’CONNOR

Work looks set to begin in Doneraile on a major social housing development as the council has begun work on recruiting a developer.

The Cork County Council project is a 17-house build which consists of four one-bed single storey houses, four two-bed two storey dormer houses and nine three-bed two storey homes.

The development will also see a new access road to the site on Convent Road along with parking and there will be significant site works along with landscaping.

A number of building projects in recent times had been blocked across the region due to concerns for the pearl mussel in the river Blackwater and problems associated with main drainage failings at various locations.

The council had contacted statutory bodies Irish Water, An Taisce, the Arts Council of Ireland and Failte Ireland.

Irish Water made a recommendation that the council liaise with them to see if there is a need to divert the current wastewater and existing water supply.

Irish Water said, in a letter to the council, that the reason for this request was in the interests of ‘public health, the proper planning and sustainable development of the area and in order to ensure adequate water supply and drainage provision’.

An environmental study was carried out on the site, which is close to the river Awbeg and it was determined that there was ‘no likelihood of significant effects’ on the surrounding environment.

The tendering process is now under way with construction firms asked to submit their details.
