Galtee Gaels 2-10 Drom-Broadford 0-14

Galtee Gaels senior footballers will be in the hat when the draw for the 2021 senior football championship is made, much to the delight of everyone involved in the club. Gaels secured their senior football status courtesy of a well deserved but keenly contested relegation play-off on a warm October Saturday afternoon in Kilmallock.

In securing their senior status Gaels relegated former kingpins Drom-broadford. Drom who have been a senior team for the past 21yrs will now have to regroup as an intermediate team next season. Ironically 21 yrs ago Drom beat Gaels on their way to securing the intermediate title and gaining promotion to senior level.

Gaels started the game brightly and had 2 points on the board inside the first 3 minutes with a well struck 45 from Bob Childs and a point from Alan Condon. Drom regrouped and at the first water break it was all square at 3pts apiece.

Gaels who were playing some of the best football of the year were finding holes in the Drom defence and finished the first half 4 ahead 1-6 to 5. Gaels, who had not scored a goal in their previous 3 games, found the net just before the half-time whistle, when a speculatively struck shot from Eoghan McNamara struck the post and dropped to the feet of the alert Alan Condon who guided the ball beyond the grasp of the Drom keeper for our first green flag of the year.

Gaels started the second half where they left off and Tommie Childs added another point after 3 minutes of the restart to put 5 between the sides. However, tradition dies hard and Drom scored the next 3 points to close the gap to 2 before Alan Condon scored his second goal of the day.

The sides exchanged points before Drom kicked 3 in a row to leave 4 between the sides at the second water break. Drom refused to lie down and used all their craft and experience to close the gap to 2 before Brendan Childs blasted over to put 3 between the sides with the clock ticking down. Drom continued to press but Gaels defended stoutly and were 2 points ahead at the final whistle. The 7 times county champions were relegated and the 50+ Gaels supporters roared with joy and relief.

It has been a tough season for all concerned. The restructured championship meant that any below par performances would be punished and the chances to regroup would be minimal. However this group has an inner belief that is difficult to measure and their application and preparation for this game since the defeat to St.Kierans was commendable. Great credit must go to the management team of John McGrath, Sean Kearney, Brian Begley, Mgt Ann McGrath and Norma Quane, for instilling the never say die attitude into this group.

Galtee Gaels would like to thank all involved with this team for the wonderful commitment they have shown in this very difficult season.

Galtee Gaels would also like to thank our wonderful supporters for your great support and patience despite the restrictions applied to you this past season.

We all hope that next season will be more successful and enjoyable for all.
